Modern Foreign Languages
At Stepgates, we believe that learning a foreign language is a gateway to understanding the wider world. Spanish is taught across Key Stage 2 by a Spanish speaker, bringing authentic language and cultural experiences directly into the classroom.
Spanish is delivered as a part of a carousel of subjects in KS2, ensuring every child receives regular, high-quality language instruction. Our curriculum is guided by the Lightbulb Languages scheme, which provides a strong foundation in vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge. We also enrich our lessons with a variety of additional resources to keep learning engaging and tailored to the needs of our pupils.
Children are provided with opportunities to practice and develop the four essential language skills:
- Speaking – through songs and music, role-play and conversational activities.
- Listening – listening to the pronunciation of a Spanish speaker, classroom interaction and games.
- Reading – with texts, stories and visual prompts.
- Writing – through sentence-building, creative tasks, and structured exercises.
These skills are introduced progressively, in line with the KS2 National Curriculum, which encourages pupils to express ideas, understand basic grammar, and communicate for practical purposes.
We place great importance on celebrating the richness and diversity of Spanish-speaking cultures. Pupils explore traditions, festivals, food, music and geography from both Spain and Latin America, supporting them to appreciate global citizenship.
By learning Spanish, pupils not only gain a valuable skill, but also develop confidence, curiosity and empathy; qualities that will serve them well in their future education and beyond.
