Writing

At Stepgates, the Letterjoin Handwriting Scheme begins with gross motor skill lessons to support children’s muscle tone and develop the core before fine motor skills can begin. Through daily practice, children throughout the school are invited to progress their skills and take ownership of their own presentation through careful demonstration of writing individual letters, words, sentences and dictation.

We use the ‘Ready Steady Write’ Scheme of learning to progress our extended writing opportunities through each year. This mechanism begins in the Early Years, with confidence in accuracy and moves through a steady, systematic and predictable approach to enable all learners to achieve. This immersive scheme gives children real-life experiences from which to draw on and make connections within their writing, refining and practising grammatical skills alongside composition and creativity.
