Physical Education (P.E)
At Stepgates, Physical Education is a vital part of our curriculum, promoting physical health, teamwork, confidence and the enjoyment of physical activity. We follow the GetSet4PE scheme, which provides a broad and balanced programme tailored to the needs and abilities of all pupils.
PE is delivered by class teachers and is taught through a progressive curriculum that builds skills, knowledge and enjoyment. Lessons are inclusive and engaging, with clear learning objectives and opportunities for children to develop physically, socially and emotionally. GetSet4PE ensures coverage of key areas, including:
- Games
- Gymnastics
- Dance
- Athletics
- Outdoor Adventurous Activities.
In PE sessions, children practice and refine a wide range of physical skills:
- Fundamental movement skills – running, jumping, throwing and catching.
- Teamwork and strategy – through competitive and cooperative games.
- Performance and creativity – in dance and gymnastics.
- Resilience and problem-solving – in outdoor challenges.
Our PE curriculum supports the aims of the National Curriculum for KS1 and KS2, helping children to:
- Develop competence in a broad range of physical activities.
- Be physically active for sustained periods.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities.
- Lead healthy, active lives.
We are proud to offer swimming lessons in our on-site pool, delivered by a qualified swimming teacher. Children in years 1–6 have the opportunity to develop water confidence, learn essential swimming strokes, and understand water safety in a safe and supportive environment. These lessons form an important part of our PE provision and help pupils meet the National Curriculum requirement to swim at least 25 metres by the end of Year 6.
We celebrate physical achievement and effort through sports days, inter-school competitions, internal and external sports clubs, and active playtimes. Children are encouraged to set personal goals, support their peers, and reflect on their progress. PE also contributes to wider wellbeing, helping children to understand the importance of physical activity for mental health, focus and self-esteem.
By making PE an exciting and valued part of school life, we aim to inspire every child to enjoy being active, build confidence through movement and embrace new physical challenges with enthusiasm.
