Computing

At Stepgates, we are committed to delivering a high-quality computing education that prepares pupils for life in a digital world. In line with the National Curriculum for Computing and statutory safeguarding guidance including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), our curriculum ensures pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to use technology safely, confidently, and creatively.

Curriculum Approach: Teach Computing

From Autumn 2025, we are proud to adopt the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) 'Teach Computing' curriculum, developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. This decision reflects our commitment to:

  • Curriculum coherence and progression from Year 1 to Year 6
  • Inclusive and research-informed pedagogy
  • Coverage of all statutory computing strands: Computer Science, Information Technology, and Digital Literacy
  • Reducing teacher workload through structured, editable resources

The Teach Computing curriculum offers:

  • Over 500 hours of free, high-quality resources
  • Learning graphs that show progression across year groups and units
  • A spiral curriculum that revisits key concepts to deepen understanding

Online Safety: Embedded and Unplugged

Online safety is a core element of our computing provision and wider safeguarding strategy. In addition to digital lessons, we offer unplugged learning opportunities that promote safe behaviours and critical thinking without the use of devices. These include:

  • PSHE-linked assemblies such as Click or Quit? which explore online risks and decision-making
  • Interactive workshops and role-play to explore cyberbullying, misinformation, and digital wellbeing
  • Resources from Internet Matters, UK Safer Internet Centre, and Mentally Healthy Schools to support cross-curricular learning

These unplugged sessions complement our computing lessons and help pupils build digital resilience, critical thinking, and safe habits in a developmentally appropriate way.
